Diane Downs works with individuals of all genders from adolescence through older adults, although most of her experience has been with teens and young adults. Before becoming a social worker, she was a high school teacher for 23 years and a social worker in a therapeutic school. She is particularly interested in supporting adoptees, young people with ADHD and other learning differences, sexual abuse or assault survivors, and LGBTQ+ youth as they heal from loss or trauma, discover their strengths, and construct an authentic identity. Through motivational interviewing, using a strengths-based perspective, Diane solicits client concerns and current supports and challenges. In addition to listening to understand, validating feelings, and respecting lived experience, she connects individuals with resources and uses approaches such as EMDR, mindfulness, DBT, and CBT to help them reach their goals. Diane has also run support groups for adoptees, trans/nonbinary teens, and parents of trans/nonbinary teens.

Times of conflict and change are often uncomfortable, but they are also opportunities for growth. Silence and loneliness breed shame, which interferes with a sense of connectedness. Diane looks forward to helping clients reframe their stories so they can reclaim control over their lives and strengthen their relationships.

Career counseling is a partnership between counselor and participant focused on career-related issues, which may include seeking employment, making career choices/changes, career exploration, professional development, and navigating other career-related issues. Using their expertise in career management and labor markets, the counselor aims to discuss and understand the challenge(s) being faced, support the client in gaining clarity to make complex decisions, co-create an action plan, and then empower the client to execute the plan in manageable segments.

A strong partnership is built between the counselor and participant, and the best results are achieved when participants fully engage in the process. The overall objective is defined early in the process based on the client’s goals. Actions to drive progress are agreed upon in each session and will likely include a wide variety of professional activities. Results are discussed weekly/bi-weekly, and adjustments to the plan are made accordingly. The duration of the relationship varies but typically last from 3-6 months.
